TT “How do I start”

As of 2022 all competitors entering ANY TT event MUST have a working front and rear light affixed to their bike, either flashing or constant.

TT’ing is an easy way to get into racing. No bunch to keep up with and no danger of being dropped! The beauty of time trialling is that the rider sets their own standard and then measures their effort over the course on the given day. This is why it’s also known as the ‘Race of Truth’…just you and your bike!

To get started

You don’t need a time trial bike – just turn up on your normal road bike to one of our regular club events during the summer where you can enter on the line. You’ll be given a number, told your start time and then all you have to do is ride round the course in the shortest time you can!

Do you need special time trialling kit?

No. Some riders will have TT bikes etc, some won’t. You will see riders with very expensive and fast-looking bikes and equipment however do not be intimidated by this as it is still mostly all about your legs and not the bike. So…enjoy, it really is great fun and…fitness!

First Timers

I found the below video very helpful to know what to expect on your first time. Another option is to come volunteer at a TT before riding one, this not only gives you a great insight but is extremely helpful in the running of these events.

Since this was released front lights have also become mandatory.

Club Competition

At ARCC we have a club competition, which consists of 8 events across the season. The events are all on quiet roads and the HQ/ start is mostly at the A4129 Thame road layby (just south of the junction with Green Lane.) The competition is based on points for places and we run a separate age-based handicap competition, so there is something for everyone. These events are an ideal introduction to Open Events as there will be many club-mates to chat to and ask advice about all things TT.

Club TT Competition Categories

Senior Male & Female (18-39)

Vet40 Male & Female (40-49)

Vet50 Male & Female (50-59)

Vet60+ Male & Female (60+)

*All categories will be subdivided into TT bike & Road bike. Please note ‘aero upgrades’ such as TT bars or disc wheels on road bikes will put you into the TT bike category.

Points System

Points are awarded for your finish position in your relevant category at all ARCC & WLC TTs

1st Place = 10 points

2nd Place = 9 points

3rd Place = 8 points

Etc.

The 50 Mile WLC TT on the 18th of June 2023 will be awarded a 50% points bonus i.e. 1st = 15 points, 2nd = 13.5 points, 3rd = 12 points etc.

  • Best 5 results across ARCC & WLC
  • If tied on points fasted time on the home ARCC course (HCC202) wins
  • You must volunteer at least once to qualify for the overall points comp

Next Level

The next level up is the fully open events organised around the UK under the ‘Cycling Time Trials’ (CTT) organisation. These have to be entered two weeks in advance via the CTT website or online. To enter you have to be a member of an affiliated club such as ARCC. As the fields are limited to 120 riders sometimes the event (on the most popular courses) can be over-subscribed. When this occurs, the organiser takes the ‘best 120 riders’ and so your best times over standard distances are requested on entry. There are also ‘mid marker’ events where only those who are slower than a certain time are allowed to enter. This enables riders to still gain entry in order to improve their personal best on the most popular courses, so a very equitable approach!
