Good evening ARCC Rouleurs,
Welcome to the Summer Broadcast. This year’s summer is blessing us with fabulous sunshine allowing us to finally get those sharp tan lines British cyclists have always lacked when compared to their counterparts in Spain and Italy who seem to have a permanent charred skin look. Albeit, with sunshine comes the heat and with heat comes the sweat that annoyingly seams to start on top of one’s head and then slowly creeps down to the natural eyebrow dam which, anyone in the Netherlands can tell you, is only good until it gets oversaturated. Before you know it, eyebrows are breached and all that deluge of sweat is unleashed, flooding one’s eyelids, mixing with suncream creating a similar teargas effect most peaceful protesters experience following a friendly clash with the anti-riot police force. Suddenly after being blessed with utter blindness that, while useful in helping us ignore the fear-mongering media, in cycling is often the cause of an almost inhuman growl of pain followed by sudden breaking, a panic induced heart rate surge and immediate indulgence in practising the juiciest swearwords that only seem to find their way to one’s lips in situations like this. Only upon the realisation that the brakes have worked and death has not taken hold do we start to relax and allow ourselves to laugh…if somewhat uncontrollably. Clearly, that sort of an ordeal would prompt even the angriest car driver to stop mid abusive shouts and instead start thanking the lord you were so lucky not to get run over.
The chance that they will end up being considerably more careful around cyclists, even for a day, is when yours truly might, just might, think it was all worth it.
Vive le soleil!
CHARITY: SAMARITANS NOW OFFICIALLY AN ARCC CHARITY
I want to thank all the ARCC rouleurs who came to this year’s Samaritans ride. As you all know ARCC has been a staunch supporter of the Samaritans over many years. Several of our members are also Samaritan volunteers helping people, listening when nobody else will listen, offering hope when those calling see none, comforting desperate souls and saving lives. So NOW we have made it official. For every ARCC rider that comes to the Samaritans’ charity ride, ARCC will donate additional £5 to Samaritans. Starting this year, we have donated £5 for each of the 61 riders who attended the ride. We only hope that next year we will have many more riders enjoy the ride organised by the charity also knowing that we are going to do our bit as a club to help. Thank you for your support!
WELCOME RICH JONES – OUR NEW KIT MANAGER
First and foremost I want to thank Darran, who has been our Quartermaster for over 7 years. He was instrumental in bringing NEW ARCC jersey design on board, designing the NEW ARCC logo, managing the relationship with our kit supplier, as well as fulfilling all our orders directly or via the kit shop, all on his own! THANK YOU!
And now, please join me in welcoming Rick Jones, who has volunteered to take on the Kit Manager role. However, this time around, Rich is not taking it all on his own. Considering we have grown as a club with more kit requirements, he is going to be assisted by Nicola, our Women’s Ride coordinator who will keep some stock for our female riders making trying for size, deliveries and collections far easier. Thank you both! You each get one of Darran’s proverbial shoes to bravely step into.
