Friction Free Riding
The Friction Free Riding guide found on the Home page and has been updated. Could all existing (and potential) members please re-read the document. The guide contains useful information to help ensure club rides run as smoothly and safely as possible, for example:
- Ride in line with the rider in front and don’t overlap wheels.
- Ride smoothly and don’t brake or swerve sharply.
- Communicate within your group to let people know your intentions. If you need to stop, shout ‘Stopping’.
- Avoid overtaking on the inside. If you decide to fill a gap on the inside, eg if someone has created a large gap by straying too far across the road, make sure you give a clear warning.
Winter Riding
Should winter come again, (it generally does), please note the following:
Suppose the weather forecast looks iffy: freezing overnight, but may warm up a bit Sunday morning. The ride you planned to join is still there on the website. So it must be safe to ride, yes? Not necessarily so! The ride co-planner is no better at forecasting than you are. You must make your own decision. If others turn up and set out, it just means they are prepared to risk it. Of course they may bounce better than you. A common view is that at air temperatures less than 3C there can still be ice in frost hollows. Try putting a thermometer on the road. That’s where the tyres are!
In the case of adverse weather conditions, it may be possible to post a cancellation notice on the website. If the ride still appears on the website it doesn’t guarantee anyone else (including club officials) will turn up. Please use your common sense and decide whether it would be more sensible to stay at home.
